The Great Lakes became the nation's leader in salt production at the turn of the century. Tapping an ancient underground ocean, the salt was boiled for several decades, shipped to companies like Morton Salt in Superior, WI, and Chicago. Over 70 ships never made it to port, lost and preserved by the Great Lakes in a deep slumber that is only awakened by explorers who challenge the deep for answers. Ric Mixter shares a discovery he assisted in on Lake Superior with a ship lost in 1909.
