Grand Haven and the Cutter Escanaba Loutit District Library LIVE

  • loutit library 407 Columbus Avenue Grand Haven, MI, 49417 United States (map)

The cutter Escanaba was homeported in Grand Haven for its career on the lakes, which includes more rescues than any other Coast Guard vessel on the lakes. Over 100 lives were also saved during World War II, but that number was also lost when the Michigan-built gunboat disappeared in the North Atlantic. Join historian Ric Mixter as he shares rare footage of the launch and career of the Esky along with inteviews from the men who not only were saved, but survived when the ship exploded off Greenland in 1943.
