LEAFIELD: Superior’s missing 1913 shipwreck
Leafield disappeared with a load of iron rails just outside of its destination of Fort William Ontario. Two ships reported seeing the ship, including one captain who said the steamer was on the rocks at Angus Island. This is strangely close to where Leafield’s fleet mates Monkshaven and Theano were lost - all three to November Gales.

The rescue of the men and women on the Waldo has become legend, as two lifesaving crews met on opposite sides of the Keweenaw Peninsula to save lives aboard the frozen freighter. 17 gold lifesaving medals came from the event, and many of those rescuers would save dozens more in four different shipwrecks. Many of the photos taken of the wrecks of the area came from lifesaver Anthony Glaza- who rose to prominence in the Coast Guard years later.
